Karl Eikenberry is a former U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and Lieutenant General, U.S. Army (retired). He is a Stimson Center Distinguished Fellow; faculty member of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University; Senior Advisor to the United States Institute of Peace; and Board Member of the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva and The Asia Foundation. In addition to his diplomatic service as U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan and 35-year career as a U.S. Army officer with command and political-military assignments postings in the U.S., Asia, and Europe, he has also taught at Stanford University and focused on Saudi Arabia defense efforts while living in Riyadh. He is a graduate of the United States Military Academy, has Master's Degrees from Harvard and Stanford Universities, and attended the British Ministry of Defence Chinese Language School in Hong Kong and Nanjing University.
