Event Details

From palaces, temples, and pagodas to pavilions, tombs, and theaters, the Yuan Dynasty, which only enjoyed a hundred years of prosperity, has left an unparalleled architectural legacy for future generations. Following Chinese Architecture: A History, ProfessorNancy Shatzman Steinhardt at the University of Pennsylvania shares with us her latest work, Yuan: Chinese Architecture in a Mongol Empire. This is the first comprehensive English-language study of Chinese architecture under Mongol rule. What kind of architectural and cultural achievements were made under the rule of Genghis Khan and Kublai Khan? How did Chinese architecture influence other regions during Yuan's expansion?

On the morning of March 30th, Professor Steinhardt will discuss her research virtually. She will be joined by Jian Wei, Emeritus Professor at School of History, Renmin University of China, to discuss the historical significance of Yuan-Dynasty architecture at Yale Center Beijing.
