Yet surgeon and award-winning author Andrew Lam '98 says one factor spurred more medical breakthroughs than any other -- War.


On Jan. 19, 2024, physician, author, and Yale College alumnus Andrew Lam will share the most riveting stories from his latest book, The Masters of Medicine: Our Greatest Triumphs in the Race to Cure Humanity's Deadliest Diseases. He will reveal how D-Day, Luftwaffe bombing raids, and top-secret Liberty ship cargo during WWII bequeathed humanity innovations in surgery, cancer treatment, and trauma care that still serve us today, and will also share about his career balancing medicine and literature.

    Andrew Lam, M.D., is a retina surgeon and the award-winning author of The Masters of Medicine: Our Greatest Triumphs in the Race to Cure Humanity's Deadliest Diseases. His prior books include: Saving Sight, an Amazon bestseller about his surgical career, and Two Sons of China and Repentance, both novels of the Second World War. Before attending medical school he earned a history degree from Yale University. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.
