On October 27, Ivano Dal Prete, Senior Lecturer in the History of Science and Medicine program at Yale University, will be joining online to discuss his recent monograph On the Edge of Eternity. In this book, Ivano Dal Prete overturns the received history of deep time in the Western civilization. Against the common assumption of the eighteenth-century discovery of the antiquity of the Earth, Dal Prete shows that its old age was widely and freely discussed in medieval and early modern Europe, including in didactic works intended for a large audience. The current narrative is the product of Enlightenment political and cultural agendas, that created the myth of a Christian tradition uniformly opposed to the idea of an ancient world.
