Event Details

From dining customs to everyday dishes, food offers a unique lens through which to explore China's history and society. On November 5, Joanna Waley-Cohen PhD '87, Provost Emerita of NYU Shanghai, and Xiaoqing Chen, documentary filmmaker, food writer, and director of the most well-known Chinese food documentary series A Bite of China, will explore the connections between food, history, and Chinese culture.

Waley-Cohen was a doctoral student of Jonathan Spence PhD '65, the late Sterling Professor Emeritus of History at Yale University. In her lecture, she will examine late imperial Chinese society and political power through the lens of food, taste, and material life in eighteenth-century China. Following her lecture, Xiaoqing Chen will present Dynasties on the Table: Food and the Stories of History, exploring how the foods we still eat today preserve traces of past dynasties and tell stories of cultural exchange and the rise of fall of empires.
