Event Details

Professors Deborah Davis and Suowei Xiao, sociologists who study contemporary Chinese urban family dynamics, will discuss their work as featured in Chinese Families Upside Down: Intergenerational Dynamics and Neo-Familism in Early 21st Century (Yunxiang Yan, ed.). Their talk will focus on parental involvement in urban marriages and intergenerational cooperation and conflicts in childrearing among urban families. An audience Q&A session will follow. Registered participants will receive an electronic copy of their chapters in Chinese Families Upside Down.

    Deborah Davis is a Professor Emerita of Sociology at Yale University where she served as Director of Academic Programs at Yale Center for Study of Globalization, Chair of the Department of Sociology, and Co-Chair, Women Faculty Forum. Her primary teaching interests include inequality and stratification, contemporary Chinese society, and methods of fieldwork. She previously served six terms as a Trustee of the Yale China Association and chaired the Advisory Board of the Universities’ Service Center Library at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Currently she is on the editorial boards of The China Quarterly, The China Review, and the Chinese Sociological Review.

    Suowei Xiao is Associate Professor of Sociology at Beijing Normal University. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology at University of California, Berkeley, and B.A. in Chinese literature at Peking University. She is the author of Desire and Dignity: Class, Gender, and Intimacy in Transitional China (2018) and a number of articles on gender, intergenerational relations, family change, and class formation.
