Event Description

"An accomplished disciple owes his accomplishment to his great teacher.” In November 2015, Yale announced a substantial initiative to support faculty diversity, which was followed by similar announcements from University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and other major schools. What is the significance of composing the faculty of a university? How do American research universities hire and retain outstanding talented faculty members? This lecture will explore these questions and the structural difficulties in the faculty development “pipeline”, as well as the importance of engagement by the faculty in order to achieve institutional goals.

    Dr. Karen Anderson

    Associate Provost for Academic Resources and Faculty Development at Yale University

    Dr. Karen Anderson is responsible for policies, procedures, and strategic planning related to faculty appointments and budgets. She is also in charge of initiatives that support faculty diversity and for events and programs that enhance faculty career development. She is a fellow in Yale’s Trumbull College. Before joining Yale, she served as Senior Associate Provost at Wesleyan University. Her undergraduate degree in Philosophy comes from Hunter College in New York City; she holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, where she studied comparative religion with a focus on Hinduism.
