Event Description

What is happening now in securities, futures and derivatives law? Nancy Liao and Andrew Verstein will discuss recent events and emerging trends in securities, futures, and derivatives. They will focus on what is new: a new administration, new judicial opinions, and above all the impact of new technology. Likely topics include: High Frequency Trading and Spoofing; Blockchain and Coin Offerings; Recent CFTC initiatives and Fintech.

    John R. Raben/Sullivan & Cromwell Executive Director, Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law, and Associate Research Scholar in Law

    Nancy Liao is an Associate Research Scholar in Law and the John R. Raben/Sullivan & Cromwell Executive Director, Yale Law School Center for the Study of Corporate Law. Prior to becoming Executive Director in 2016, she worked on formulating policy and providing legal advice on both prudential and derivatives regulation. Liao was most recently Assistant General Counsel at the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, Inc. ("ISDA"), where she crafted and executed cross-jurisdictional advocacy strategies pertaining to derivatives clearing. Liao graduated from Yale Law School and Harvard University, where she majored in government.

    Andrew Verstein

    Associate Professor of Law Wake Forest University

    Professor Verstein teaches contract law, corporate law, and securities and commodities regulation. He frequently discusses these topics with reporters at the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Bloomberg and other periodicals. His research has been published or is forthcoming in the Yale Law Journal, The Virginia Law Review, the Northwestern Law Review, the Michigan Law Review.

    Professor Verstein has previously taught at Yale Law School, Fudan University and East China University of Political Science & Law in Shanghai. He graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and received his law degree from Yale Law School.
