Event Description

If a child can acquire a second language through enough target language input, can we help them do so through shared reading in the target language? Using personal experiences and examples in her school community, Dr. Wang will share with parents the possibilities and tips on helping young children acquire a second language through shared reading of children's books at home.

    Gan Wang

    Yale Ph.D. '99, Founder of The Little Oak Children's House in Beijing

    Gan received her B.A. and M.A. from Peking University and Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University. After returning to China, she founded an experimental preschool, The Little Oak Children’s House, in 2001, where progressive education ideas are practiced. She also has been working on equity issues in early childhood education in rural China.

    In addition to school management and teaching, Gan does teacher training, parent workshops, curriculum development, and writes on related topics. She also serves on various non-profit boards, including Social Venture Partners International and the progressive independent school The Putney School in Vermont, USA. Gan is also the vice president of the China Orff-Schulwerk Association.
