On May 7, Stephen Darwall, the Andrew Downey Orrick Professor of Philosophy at Yale University, will join us to discuss his recent book, The Heart and Its Attitudes. In this book, he systematically explores "attitudes of the heart"—such as remorse, love, trust, gratitude, personal anger, and jealousy—and their role in mediating personal relationship, attachment, and connection. He also examines how these heartfelt attitudes mirror "attitudes of the will"—guilt, resentment, and blame.
In this talk, Professor Darwall will delve into his philosophical exploration of these heartfelt phenomena, examining the nature of emotions, moral sentiments, and clarifying the distinction between "attitudes of the heart" and "attitudes of the will."
