On January 23, the Yale Norfolk Chamber Music Festival will partner with two renowned musicians from the prestigious Shanghai Quartet, to perform three chamber music masterpieces from the Classical, Romantic, and Impressionist periods. This concert marks the Norfolk Festival's China premiere. Join us for an unforgettable evening of chamber music, celebrating this remarkable collaboration between Yale musicians and the Shanghai Quartet.

    Melvin Chen is a Professor in the Practice of Piano and Director of the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival at Yale School of Music. Previously, He served as Associate Director at the Bard College Conservatory of Music and was Artistic Director of the chamber music program at the Hotchkiss School Summer Portals. He has served as a jury member of numerous international competitions, including a jury chairman for the 2024 Cleveland International Piano Competition. His notable solo recordings include Beethoven’s “Diabelli” Variations, piano music by Joan Tower, and sonatas and other pieces by Shostakovich.

    Member at Shanghai Quartet

    Angelo Xiang Yu is an active recitalist and chamber musician, serving as a member of the Shanghai Quartet and Chair of Chamber Music at Tianjin Juiliard School. He won the First Prize at the 2010 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition and received the Avery Fisher Career Grant from Lincoln Center. He has performed as a soloist with major orchestras and appeared at numerous world-renowned venues and music festivals. He joined the faculty at the New England Conservatory in 2015 and the roster of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York in 2017.

    Member at Shanghai Quartet

    Sihao He is the newest member of the renowned Shanghai Quartet, a full-time faculty member at Tianjin Juilliard School, and a member of the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program. He also serves on the faculty of the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University. He has performed extensively as a soloist with leading orchestras and in recitals at numerous concerts and music festivals. In 2019, he earned third prize at Munich’s ARD International Music Competition.

    Chuhan Zhang BA/MM '18

    Lecturer at China Academy of Art

    Chuhan Zhang received her B.A. in History at Yale College, an M.M. in Piano Performance at Yale School of Music, and PhD in Art History at the China Academy of Art. Currently, she is a lecturer at the China Academy of Art and has received widespread acclaim for her performances in China and abroad. She is a prize-winner and participant of international piano competitions and music festivals. In 2023, Chuhan was selected as one of the top ten pianists by the People's Music Publishing House and the Chinese Musician Association. Her albums to date include The Moments (2013), Chopin (2016), ShinyWhale (2021), and Chopin Preludes (2024).
